It's showtime!

With the end of June came the Royal Highland Show. We had a successful show with many old friends and customers coming to say hello. Our Harris Tweed Bags were as ever popular as were the Canvas Bags.

Packing for the Highland.

At the start of July Glenalmond Tweed hit the road again for the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace. Again this was a successful show and the weather was better than expected.

May Update

The month began with a rather wet and windy Badminton Horse Trials. As ever it was a fantastic event with a new cross country course proving challenging even for some of the best riders in the world. It was great to catch up with some of our customers from down south.

Back at base our new tweeds have been unwrapped and sent away for sampling. The lovely pale blue herringbone and the more muted check below are among our favorites. The new clothes collection will be available in the Autumn. For now we have a selection of Harris Tweed Coats and Jackets available on our website.

However, it is not just new clothes on the cards. Our Harris Tweed Dog Silhouette Cushions continue to be a firm favourite and we are hoping to introduce some cats too. The white cat below and the black cat have had positive feedback so far.

We have also added some new products to our range including these lovely Harris Tweed brogues, handmade in Spain by family shoe makers George's Shoes. These fabulous shoes are available in our shop as well as at selected shows and events.

Bessie, the shop manager, still loves to give Glenalmond Tweed's visitors a helping hand. Here she is having a snooze in the shop and enjoying the warmer Spring weather.

The Hebrides: A first visit.

Visiting the Outer Hebrides certainly feels like travelling to another country. The ferry terminal at Ullapool is over two hours drive North from Glenalmond Tweed 'HQ'. The boat takes a a further two hours and forty five minutes to reach Stowaway, the largest town on the island. A short drive out of Stornoway and the barren wilderness spans for miles and miles with tiny, winding roads cutting through the rocky windswept moonscape.

The purpose of the trip was to collect the tweed for our new collection of Harris Tweed Handbags and Luggage which will be available later this year. Harris Tweed Hebrides, located at Shawbost is the largest mill. It is loud with a great sense of urgency about it. The Harris Tweed industry really is booming like never before.  Huge machines work full pelt processing the wool.  In the pattern room rolls of  tweeds, all the colours of the rainbow, lie piled on top of one another so high it is necessary to take a step back to take it all in. There are an amazing array of plaids and herringbones all woven by hand in the islands.

Later in the day a visit to The Carloway Mill, offered another opportunity to see how this versatile and sustainable cloth is produced. Tweeds are stacked in every nook and cranny. Upstairs the steam collects, generating heat and humidity equal to a sauna. Up here we discover hundreds of patterns, yarns and rolls of tweed, an amazing archive of generations of weavers.

Even in the milder Spring weather, the wind in the Hebrides is unimaginable. At certain times it was difficult to walk in a straight line. All over the islands the hardy sheep graze peacefully seemingly unaware of the weather. Thankfully the stormy conditions cleared and crisp blue skies, like those above came into view . It seems only natural that such incredible cloth should come from one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Our Perthshire Shop

Our Perth shop is situated in the beautiful hills about half an hours drive from Perth. A strange location for a shop you might say. However the stunning backdrop creates the perfect location. With hardy sheep grazing on the hill nearby it is easy to recognise how tough the Hebridean sheep have to be to survive the even harsher weather they must face to survive. Great rolls of Harris Tweed, made using their excellent wool, sit by the window ready to be cut into cushions, sold by the metre or sent away to be made into clothes, bags and luggage

Out of the window you can gaze across the landscape and if you are lucky watch all sorts of wildlife, especially birds, including Red Kites, Buzzards and Partridge. Recent additions with Spring include Lapwings and Curlews, now we are just waiting for the Swallows. Here at Glenalmond Tweed we are just as passionate about where we work as we are about what we do.

We warmly invite visitors to come and visit us. You can enjoy the spectacular surroundings, learn more about Harris Tweed and view our extensive collection of Harris Tweed clothes, Harris Tweed bags, Harris Tweed luggage, cushions, knitwear and the most recent addition - hip flasks!

This month we took delivery of the new Harris Tweeds for our Autumn/Winter 14/15 collection. We are currently in the thick of choosing the perfect trimmings to compliment the subtle variety of colours in the tweed. Easier said than done - watch this space!

Nearby there is fantastic walking in the Sma Glen as well a chance to see red squirrels and dear along the way. We highly recommend the nearby town of Crieff to visitors as well as the wonderful Drummond Castle Gardens.

The Glenalmond Tweed Company Shop is open Monday to Saturday 10am until 4pm.Out with these times please phone us on 01738 880 322 to check we are available. Please click here for directions.
